Sawan Special Tales:

Sawan 2023:special tale(katha)

In a city, there once lived a wealthy merchant. His business extended far and wide, and he was highly respected by all the people in the city. Despite having everything, the merchant was deeply unhappy because he had no son to inherit his business. The worry about not having an heir troubled him constantly, even after achieving so much in life.

In his desire to have a son, the merchant observed a strict fast and worshiped Lord Shiva every Monday. In the evening, he would visit the Shiva temple and light a ghee lamp in front of Lord Shiva. Impressed by his devotion, Goddess Parvati became pleased and asked Lord Shiva to fulfill the merchant’s wish.

Lord Shiva explained, “In this world, everyone receives the results according to their actions. Be it humans or other beings, they reap the fruits of their deeds accordingly.”

Despite Lord Shiva’s explanation, Goddess Parvati remained unconvinced and continued to beseech him to grant the merchant’s desire. Finally, due to her persistent appeals, Lord Shiva had to bestow the boon of a son upon the merchant.

However, there was a condition attached to the boon. The son would live for only sixteen years. That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the merchant’s dream and granted him the boon of a son. He also informed him that the son would live for only sixteen years.

Though the merchant was happy to have a son, the fear of his short life overshadowed his joy. He continued to observe the Monday fast as before. After a few months, a beautiful boy was born to him, and the entire household was filled with happiness.

A grand celebration was held to welcome the child, but the merchant’s happiness was subdued because he knew about his son’s short lifespan. When the boy turned twelve, the merchant sent him to Varanasi (Banaras) to receive education under his maternal uncle’s guidance.

During their journey, wherever the merchant and his nephew rested, they would perform rituals and offer food to Brahmins. Finally, they reached a city where the princess’s wedding was taking place, and the entire city was decorated. The groom’s father, the king, was worried as the groom had only one eye and feared that the king of the bride might refuse the marriage due to this.

He was afraid that it would bring disgrace to the kingdom. The groom’s father noticed the merchant’s nephew and came up with an idea. He thought of marrying the princess to the boy and, after the wedding, giving him wealth and clothing, then sending him away, and taking the princess to his city.

The groom’s father discussed this with the maternal uncle of the boy, who agreed to the proposal for the sake of wealth. Thus, the boy was dressed as the groom, and the wedding took place with the princess.

After providing immense wealth to the boy’s maternal uncle, the groom’s father bid farewell to the princess and sent her away. On the other side, the merchant and his wife were eagerly waiting for their son to return. They had promised that if they received news of their son’s death, they would give up their lives.

But as soon as they learned that their son was alive and returning with the princess, they were overjoyed. The merchant, along with his wife and friends, went to the city’s gates to receive them.

Seeing the princess, the boy’s happiness knew no bounds. That night, Lord Shiva came to the merchant in a dream and said, “O noble merchant, your son has lived a full life due to my boon. Your devotion and observance of Monday’s fast have fulfilled all your desires.”

Thus, the merchant’s wish was granted because of his devotion to Lord Shiva and observance of the Monday fast with the associated rituals. In the same way, devotees who faithfully observe the Monday fast and listen to its rituals have all their desires fulfilled.
